A Little House for Taganga

There are some things you can’t walk away from - this is one of those moments for me. I know I can do something and I know you could help.

This is just one kitten in Taganga but this is not the first time Clara has called me for help. Between the two of us we already have taken in too many animals off the streets in Colombia. There are spray and neuter events a couple times a year. But the need is constant and always growing.

There are some places in the world that are old fashioned. We don't wish nor expect to change Taganga culture...we just see an incredible opportunity to foster these baby kittens that seem to appear out of nowhere and find them a good home. That's our intention.

And so we need your love! Most importantly we need people to actually come to Taganga and help us take care of the animals that suddenly appear at Clara's door. People who want to take a baby kitten in need to the vet. Or perhaps even adopt one and bring one home. People who want to clean the beach all on their own, just because the beach is in need of it. People who don't need instruction, they just step into action. That's the kind of love we are calling in.

Clara's house is one safe haven, one place where travelers can come to meet and get to know the local community and help out with the local animals that find refuge in her house. She could take in more with a constant stream of visitors. She could take in more with the funds to actually care for more animals.

By investing here you are investing in a future where baby kittens don't need to pass away because of a quick sterilization event.

This is how you can help: - Come visit Clara's House in Colombia, see what the town needs and step into action - Comment, like or share this campaign - Support financially if you can.

Clara

Clara is a mother to all, an artist, and an incredible person. She started Clara's House hotel in Taganga over 10 years ago and has always found ways to recycle, even though there are no official recycling programs in Taganga. How? By working with local recycladoras; people who collect plastic on the street and return them to a recycling house next door in order to make a little bit of cash. That is the only semi formal recycling program in Taganga.

Clara would like to see Taganga open a bigger separate space to take on the need of the stray animal problem here and that's exactly what we'd like to help with.

Clara
The $15,855

Here is what we're trying to raise.

Here is what we're going to do with it.

These estimations are based on perhaps 5 new animals in addition to Clara's loving pets who may come through the doors next year. But also on the hopes of establishing a new place and

Objective 1

Relieve Clara of the Current Load

This objective covers the immediate expenses Clara is currently carrying herself.

Expected Vet Emergency Bills$1,250

$250 × 5 — One animal from the street has cost between $125 to $350 based on the need of the animal.

Food$625

$125 × 5 — One cat costs about $7 to feed per month and a dog costs around $10.

Basic heartwork and tick maintenance for 12 animals for a year$180

$36 × 5 — One cat or dog costs about $3 to protect each month.

Objective 1 subtotal$2,055

Objective 2

Save for a Future Space

This is the larger, longer-term goal of creating a dedicated Casa de Recursos/Animal Refuge Space

Rent and Utilities$3,000

$500 × 6 — Rent in Taganga could range from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars based on who is involved. Luckily we have some good friends who would give us a local price.

Renovations$1,800

$900 × 2 — renovations could entail paying workers to clean a lot that may be full of trash right now. Current labor goes for about ($9 to $15). We may also need to fix walls, install water systems, fix fences. This could equal about 60 days and 2 men.

Furniture$1,000

$1,000 × 1 — This could include basic necessities like a kitchen, seating, air conditioning.

Labor$3,600

$20 × 180 — We would need 2 to 3 full time employees to keep things running and we already have a good idea on who could manage this space. Current labor rates go for $9 to $15 per day

Supplies$600

$100 × 6 — Basic cleaning supplies, toys and medical supplies for the animals could be modest ranging around $100 per month

Legal, Registration & Permits$2,000

$2,000 × 1 — Funds reserved for legal consultation, business/organizational registration, contracts, accounting setup, local permits, safety inspections, and other requirements necessary to establish and operate the Casa de Recursos responsibly.

Marketing and Business Adminstration$1,800

$300 × 6 — Supports the ongoing work required to manage the campaign, including communications, marketing, website management, fundraising administration, financial tracking, donor updates, and project coordination.

Objective 2 subtotal$13,800
Total campaign goal$15,855
